EDUCATION VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Empower Young Minds

Through Education

Step into a classroom in Zanzibar and become part of a story that begins long before your arrival and continues long after you leave. Teach, mentor, and inspire — one child, one lesson, one quiet moment at a time.

THE PROJECT

Education That Creates Lasting Change

The Asante Education Program partners with two beloved local schools — Wisdom Nursery and Primary School and School of Hope Academic — to bring steady, compassionate support into Zanzibari classrooms.

Volunteers aren’t here simply to teach. You’ll inspire confidence in a shy student, celebrate a first complete sentence, and become a familiar, trusted face. The work is small in scale and immense in meaning.

FEATURED SCHOOLS

Two Schools, One Mission

SCHOOL ONE

Wisdom Nursery and Primary School

Wisdom Nursery and Primary School – A Place of Learning and Hope. Nestled in the heart of Zanzibar, far from the tourist crowds, lies Wisdom Nursery and Primary School – a small school with a big heart. Here, children from disadvantaged families are given the opportunity for education, community, and a brighter future.
The school was founded with the aim of providing preschool and primary school children with access to basic education – regardless of their families’ income or social status. Many of the students come from humble backgrounds, some from orphanages or single-parent households.

What makes the Wisdom School so special:

Education with heart

Lessons are taught in English and Swahili and, in addition to mathematics, reading, and writing, include creative subjects such as art and music. The teachers are highly dedicated and often work under difficult conditions – with limited materials but great commitment.

Care beyond the classroom

Whenever possible, the children receive a simple meal a day – for many, the only proper meal they get. School is not just a place of learning, but also a safe space that offers support and security.

A place that grows

Despite limited resources, the school is growing steadily – with every donation, every helping hand and every person who believes in the potential of these children.

Collaboration with volunteers

Volunteers play a vital role: they assist with teaching, organize games and learning activities, help with serving food, and contribute new ideas. The cultural exchange is a valuable experience for everyone involved.

SCHOOL TWO

School of Hope Academic

The School of Hope Academic is a small, private school in the heart of Nungwi, a vibrant coastal town in northern Zanzibar. It was founded out of a deep desire to provide children from disadvantaged families with access to education and opportunities – regardless of their background or financial means.
Up to 200 children aged 4 to 12 learn here in lovingly, yet simply, furnished classrooms. Instruction is primarily in English and follows the Tanzanian curriculum, supplemented by creative activities, play, and sports. Particular emphasis is placed on social values, mutual respect, and individual support. Many of the children come from families who cannot afford a state or international school. For them, the School of Hope is more than just a place of learning – it is a safe haven, a place of belonging and joy.

WHY IT MATTERS

A single book in a child's hands today

becomes a different life tomorrow.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. In Zanzibar, that fire is tended by the patient hands of teachers — and the volunteers who stand quietly next to them.”

— ASANTE VILLAGE

We don’t measure success in weeks or photos. We measure it in the children who stay in school, the parents who learn to read alongside them, and the long-term partnerships that outlast every single volunteer. This is slow, patient, irreversible work.

LIFE IN ZANZIBAR

Your Home Between Lessons

The Volunteer Village is a calm, palm-shaded compound a short drive from both schools. Shared rooms, private bathrooms, three home-cooked meals a day, a quiet library, and a courtyard where evenings begin with tea and end with conversation.
